STATELINE, Nev. (KOLO) - Like many winter sports fans, Hana Altenburg found herself glued to the television during the latest Winter Olympics, captivated by one of the Games’ most curious sports: curling.
The slow glide of the granite stones, the urgent shouts of “Sweep! Sweep!” and the intense strategy unfolding on ice made it look deceptively simple, and irresistibly fun. So, when the Olympics wrapped up, Hana decided to find out what it actually takes to play.
Her destination: Lake Tahoe Epic Curling Club, the region’s only dedicated curling facility, located at 128 Market Street in Stateline, Nevada.
Founded in 2013, the club began with sessions at the South Tahoe Ice Arena before expanding into a dedicated two-sheet, year-round curling facility in 2019. Today, it serves curlers from across the Lake Tahoe Basin, including players traveling from Reno, Nevada and Carson City, Nevada.
The club offers leagues, social games and beginner Learn to Curl classes designed for people exactly like our reporter: curious newcomers inspired by what they’ve seen on TV.
While curling has deep roots in Canada and northern states, clubs like Lake Tahoe Epic Curling are helping the sport grow in the western U.S.
The club regularly hosts beginner sessions, youth programs and leagues for curlers of all experience levels, welcoming anyone curious enough to give the sport a try.
